With the MA in IR, it is intended that students acquire and consolidate skills corresponding to level 7 of the European Qualifications Framework to enable them to:
- Apply key IR epistemological and methodological frameworks
- Analyze the main actors and contemporary international political and economic issues
- Compare different international legal and institutional frameworks
- Apply knowledge of foreign languages in the exercise of this activity.
- Develop specialized skills essential to the holding of positions in the field of political or economic diplomacy, valuing the students’ profile for international professional contexts.
- Develop critical awareness of acquired knowledge and ability to produce relevant and original research in the field of study.
- Apply the knowledge acquired in the real context of scientific events and in partnership with external entities.
With the attendance of the school part, realization, presentation and defense of the master’s dissertation, the Master’s degree certificate in International Relations and Diplomacy: Specialization in Economic Diplomacy will be awarded.
The cycle of studies leading to the degree of master integrates a specialization course (60 ECTS) and a dissertation of scientific nature corresponding to 60 ECTS.

The Master is organized in 2 semesters that correspond to the curricular structure, plus 1 year dedicated to the preparation, realization and presentation of a dissertation defense.
The course is equivalent to 60 ECTS for the curricular part and 60 ECTS for the preparation, realization and presentation of the dissertation, which makes a total of 120 ECTS credits in the following scientific areas:

Those who meet the conditions set forth in DL 74/2006, of 26 March, as amended by DL nº 65/2018, of 16 August, and in the regulations of the cycle of studies leading to the degree of Master may apply for admission to this cycle of studies:
- Holders of a licenciado degree or legal equivalent;
- Holders of a foreign higher academic degree conferred in a 1st study cycle organized according to the Bologna principles;
- Holders of a foreign higher academic degree that is recognized as fulfilling the objectives of the degree of licenciado by the statutorily competent body of the UPT;
- Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum vitae that is recognized by the statutorily competent body of the UPT.
Candidates will be ranked according to the criteria defined in the Study Cycle Regulations: academic background (70%), professional performance (20%), scientific production (10%).
The candidates to access the 2nd study cycle in International Relations and Diplomacy are ranked according to the merit resulting from the weighted average, as per the table in Annex II of the Regulatory Norms.

2ND STUDY CYCLE
- Holders of the bachelor degree or legal equivalent;
- Holders of a foreign academic degree conferred following a 1st cycle of studies organized according to the principles of the Bologna process by a state that adheres to that process;
- Holders of a foreign academic degree that is recognized as meeting the objectives of the bachelor degree by the Scientific Council of Portucalense University;
- Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum which is recognized by the Scientific Council of Portucalense University as attesting to their ability to undertake this cycle of studies.
Given their academic and professional background, candidates may submit a request for Application for Recognition and Accreditation of Competences, which may confer equivalence to course units of the Master’s course. Holders of Pre-Bologna licenciado degree who have more than 5 years of professional experience in the area of the master’s degree may request the substitution of the dissertation by a detailed report on the professional activity according to the regulations in force.

- Application for Recognition and Creditation of Competences according to regulations in force (including syllabus and course loads of the subjects to which you wish to request equivalence and discriminative certificate (*) with the grades obtained).
(*) These documents must be authenticated according to the legislation in force (Decreto-lei 28 de 13/03/2000).

Updated CV(*) The documents must be translated into Portuguese, whenever they are not issued in Portuguese, English, French or Spanish and stamped by the consular service or presented with the Haia Apostille affixed by the competent authority of the State where the document originated.
