COURSE HIGHLIGHTS

  • Deepening of skills in the area of International Relations and Diplomacy;
  • Strong practical component of training and assessment;
  • Adequacy to the candidates’ profile through the offer of Specialization in Economic or Political Diplomacy.

The Master in International Relations and Diplomacy offers specialised and in-depth training aimed at all recent graduates or professionals wishing to consolidate theoretical knowledge and to develop practical technical skills essential for a successful professional path in these national and international highly competitive areas.

Given the wide scope of these domains, students will be able to choose one of the most relevant specialisations of contemporary Diplomacy: political or economic. In each of them, courses were carefully thought out and designed to increase the quality and attractiveness of the finalist's professional profile or to promote the continuity of academic training in a PhD.

The offer of two specializations and several optional courses allows students to adjust the course plan to their individual interests and strategies, crossing different but interconnected areas, in a training program that is intended to be transversal, holistic and with the rigor that the diplomatic career and the exercise of functions in International Relations require.

Publication in the Diário da República, 2nd Series - No. 115 - June 16, 2020 - Announcement No. 139/2020

The attendance of the Master in International Relations and Diplomacy will allow the students to design their academic path according to their professional goals. Whether you are inclined towards an international, institutional and political-diplomatic career, or looking for new management and internationalization challenges for business, this Master will be able to provide students with the tools at his disposal in this ongoing training.

Besides the Foreign Languages ??and fundamental disciplines, such as IR Theories, Methodology and Negotiation Techniques, other optional and innovative Curricular Units will contribute to the development of the necessary analysis and practical intervention skills - political and economic - essential in a globalized world with growing interdependence.

From the technological dimension of big data applied to diplomatic practice, to the legal dimension - with Consular Law, International Tax or even the Law of the Sea -, and Economics and Management with International Financial Economics or International Business Strategies, knowledge provided to the students is wide and of cutting edge.

In addition, the integration of students in a reference research unit, IJP, will ensure proper scientific and methodological supervision, not only for their dissertations’ adequate preparation, a necessary condition for the desired Master’s degree, but also for challenging students to be aware of and to get involved in the creation and development of the most updated and relevant knowledge, namely through the organization and participation in Seminars and other scientific events with leading researchers.

Possible job opportunities:

  • Diplomatic career;
  • International organizations (incl. European institutions);
  • Multinational companies;
  • Public administration;
  • Social Communication;
  • Investigation;
  • Consultancy;
  • Banking;
  • Order of Official Dispatchers;
  • Foreign Service and borders.

With the MA in IR, it is intended that students acquire and consolidate skills corresponding to level 7 of the European Qualifications Framework to enable them to:

  1. Apply key IR epistemological and methodological frameworks
  2. Analyze the main actors and contemporary international political and economic issues
  3. Compare different international legal and institutional frameworks
  4. Apply knowledge of foreign languages in the exercise of this activity.
  5. Develop specialized skills essential to the holding of positions in the field of political or economic diplomacy, valuing the students' profile for international professional contexts.
  6. Develop critical awareness of acquired knowledge and ability to produce relevant and original research in the field of study.
  7. Apply the knowledge acquired in the real context of scientific events and in partnership with external entities.

With the attendance of the school part, realization, presentation and defense of the master's dissertation, the Master's degree certificate in International Relations and Diplomacy: Specialization in Economic Diplomacy will be awarded.
