Student Support Office

Admission to Higher Education is not only an opportunity for scientific and professional training, but also an incentive to promote intellectual, personal and social development.

The Student Support Office has the mission of identifying the main difficulties inherent to this process of academic transition, aiming at a successful adaptation of the students of Portucalense University and the promotion of their academic success, development and well-being.

It is also up to the SSO to ensure the relationship with students and former students of the UPT, providing support in their academic and professional path.

The SSO is an "open door" to support students in personal, social, academic and professional difficulties.

The aim of this office is to foster students' well-being and help them overcome adversity

 

  1. Psychological Support:
    • Appointments to help deal with situations of difficulty such as maladjustment to the University/city/course, emotional, cognitive and social level disturbances and interpersonal issues (family, relationships etc).
  2. Personal/Professional Development:
    • Workshops to promote academic success: Study methods, Concentration and Memorising techniques, Managing anxiety towards assessments and many more.
    • Mentorship Programme - 1st year students ( mentoree) are hosted by a student of the same degree and attending the 2nd or 3rd year (mentor), with the aim of promoting full integration in the academic context.
    • Volunteering Programme - National and International

    • Job Portal and Job Fair
    • Employment Observatory
    • Preparation of CVs/ Cover Letters
    • Preparation for job interviews
  4. Alumni Project:
    • Development of relationships and contacts with former students.
    • MasterWork Programme - development of partnerships for internship/job shadowing opportunities for current students in companies/alumni contacts - in partnership with Former Students Association Portucalense

Appointments to help deal with difficult situations such as maladjustment to the University/city/course, affective, cognitive and social disorders and interpersonal issues (family, relationships etc).

Personal and Professional Development

The Psychological Appointment consists of individual counselling which aims to help the individual to deal with their problems and difficulties, as well as to promote skills, resources and strategies to overcome these situations.

The Psychological Appointment is based on a relationship of trust established between you and the psychologist, developing a collaborative process which aims to meet your needs.

The Psychological Appointment service is available to all the academic community, regardless of the moment of the request and regardless of the nature of the complaints and difficulties that motivate the request for this service.

Therefore, all members of the academic community may book a Psychological Consultation whenever they wish, namely in the following situations:

o   Academic difficulties (e.g. anxiety about assessments, concentration difficulties);

o   Personal difficulties (e.g.: experiencing moments of sadness for no apparent reason, intense anxiety);

o   Adaptation difficulties (e.g. when transitioning to Higher Education and/or from Higher Education to the labour market)

o   Inter-expressional difficulties (e.g. unsatisfactory personal relationships, conflicting relationships with relatives and/or friends);

o  Personal development and self-knowledge.

Psychological Appointments usually last about 1 hour, on a weekly basis at the beginning of the process, which will gradually be adjusted to your needs until the end of the follow-up is agreed upon.

Please note that the whole follow-up process associated to the Psychological Consultations is governed by the principle of confidentiality.

The Consultations are free of charge for all the academic community at UPT.

 Vocational Guidance and Career Counselling

Vocational Guidance and Career Counselling is a service that aims to support all students at UPT in their choices and decision making regarding vocational and professional areas, regardless of the moment of their academic path.

This service promotes the construction of plans and projects for the future of each one, in which personal and professional goals are reconciled and the desired life experiences are identified (e.g. internships; voluntary work experience).

 

  Workshops

The Student Support Office has been organising Workshops that are useful to help UPT students to deal with the academic challenges they face, especially when they first arrive at Higher Education, and to overcome them successfully.

The participation in the Workshops is completely free for all UPT students, and a Certificate of Participation is given to all the presents at the end of the Workshop.

In this sense, the Student Support Office holds every year a cycle of workshops entitled: How to deal with academic challenges:

  • Study Methods
  • Time Management and Study
  • Oral Communication Techniques
  • Assessment Anxiety

The Student Support Office is also available to receive suggestions for workshops, either from teachers or students, whenever specific needs are identified that can be answered through the participation in a workshop dedicated to the topic in question.

Support for the integration of young people into working life

The Student Support Office includes in its main objectives the provision of support in the insertion of final year students in the labour market, in order to facilitate this transition process and promote the professional success of recent graduates. To this end, the Student Support Office develops and provides the services listed below, which are free of charge and available to all UPT students, especially final year and recent graduates.

The MasterWork Programme is a project of the Student Support Office and the Association of Former Students, which allows students of the University to have a real work experience, provided by entrepreneurs, former students.

This programme aims to establish a relationship between former and current students by providing them with contact with the professional world of their respective training area

Mentoring Programme

One of the main objectives of the Student Support Office is to promote the integration and adaptation of students arriving for the first time in Higher Education (HE). The transition from secondary school to HE poses very significant adaptation challenges, which are added to the challenges inherent to the phase of psychosocial development in which students find themselves.

The process of adaptation to this new reality takes place mainly during the first year of attendance at HE, and constitutes a period which is both critical and predictive of the student’s success and satisfaction throughout his/her academic path.

In this sense, a Mentorship Programme was developed for its first implementation at UPT in the academic year 2014/15, at this first moment only directed to the Psychology and Social Education courses.

The Mentorship Programme developed by the Student Support Office foresees that each new 1st year student (mentee) is received by a student of the same course, but attending a more advanced year (mentor), with the aim of promoting the integration of the former to the new academic context, as well as their intra and interpersonal development and well-being.

Each mentor is responsible for a group of about five mentees, working in articulation with the other mentor colleagues, in order to achieve a joint plan of activities aimed at the adaptation, integration and socialisation of the new students at UPT.

Job and Career

The employment observatory and the monitoring of the employability of former students allow a better understanding of the transition process of UPT students to the labour market, as well as the current characterization of graduates, regarding their academic and professional path.

In order to contribute to a successful professional integration and to bring students closer to the labour market, the Student Support Office holds an annual Job Fair, disseminates job and internship offers and monitors the UPT Alumni network.

In order to promote the transition from University to Labour Market, the Student Support Office holds an annual Job Fair, where several companies in the various areas related to the courses taught at the University are invited to attend corporate presentations, workshops, hand in their CV, conduct interviews and network with potential employers.

This initiative, besides allowing internship and employment opportunities, allows students to understand the companies’ vision so that they can better define a professional career strategy.

The Student Support Office posts job vacancies, trainee programmes, work placements, competitions and summer internships, on its Facebook page, on the slipcase which is located in front of office 317, and forwards these postings to be published on the Internal Disclosure System, student database, University Facebook page and University LinkedIn.
