Presentation

The present study programme aims to:

  1. Offer a degree in transnational law latu sensu;
  2. Develop skills of understanding and analysis of legal, institutional and social dynamics that manifest themselves internationally, at global and regional levels;
  3. Deepen the knowledge acquired in the 1st Study Programme in Law, with a special focus on the phenomenon of globalization and the international, transnational and European legal systems;
  4.  To promote the extension to a third study programme in this area of knowledge;
  5. To enable students to have a professional career, with an intermediate level of academic training between graduation and PhD
Why choose this course?

In a model of society in which globalisation reigns, legal systems that transcend national borders and regulate actions and events that transcend them are multiplying. Transnational Law latu sensu, whose name was coined by Jessup in the 1950s, can now be seen as a way of regulating global society.

The current reality is that there is a demand from students and companies for a more comprehensive and complete programme. This is the aim of this cycle of studies: to provide students – Portuguese and foreign – who are looking for legal training at second cycle level with an offer that covers the transnationality of global law, enabling them to further their studies in this field.

The Master’s in Transnational Law was designed as a response to these demands from the community; with a specialised and experienced teaching staff, the Curricular Units of this Master’s programme are articulated with the aim of offering more specialised and in-depth training that equips Master’s students with the knowledge and technical skills essential for a successful professional career. Master’s students will find Curricular Units that have been carefully thought out and designed to increase the quality and attractiveness of the finalist’s profile for potential employers or for continuing training in a third cycle.

In the first semester, students benefit from a syllabus that allows them to acquire a general overview of transnational law through course units such as Transnational Law, Global Governance and International Organisations and Global Administrative Law.

In the second semester, the programme will focus on specific subjects such as European and International Tax Law and the International and European Financial System, with the addition of a strong component in European Union Law: essential for the professional career of any lawyer working within a Member State of the European Union.
