COURSE HIGHLIGHTS

  • This Course aims to promote the acquisition of advanced knowledge in European, International and Comparative Legal Science;
  • Develop the ability to participate in scientific research projects of advanced level providing the integration in research Center-Instituto Jurídico Portucalense (IJP);
  • Prepare Master students to develop an international career.
Presentation

The general course aims to promote the acquisition of advanced knowledge in European, International and Comparative Legal Science. To this end, the study cycle aims to develop human resources capable of participating in advanced scientific research projects in European, International and Comparative Law with the epistemological and methodological rigor indispensable for international scientific research in Legal Science.
 
The study cycle requires fundamental ethical practices and principles appropriate to legal science research, with a view to problem-solving from an ethical and responsible perspective, to ensure relevant scientific research for society. The study cycle includes an individual research project that in its term will be a demonstration of highly specialized knowledge, which supports the capacity for original reflection and research.
 

The course of studies will be taught entirely in English.

The course of study aims at promoting development through the creation of knowledge in a global and interdisciplinary perspective. Aims to attract young researchers of excellence around the world, turning them into human resources capable of designing, coordinating and executing scientific research projects at an advanced level in European and Comparative Law, an international collaborative environment and the epistemological and methodological rigor necessary appropriate the production of a contribution to knowledge that expands the frontiers of knowledge and it is susceptible to international refereed publication. These objectives coincide at all with the educational, scientific and cultural design UPT as their joint and international nature are the ultimate expression of the execution of the strategic plan for internationalization. 

Career Prospects

Jurists specialized in European Law, Public International Law, Constitutional Law and Comparative Constitutional Systems. It is also a suitable training for all jurists wishing to join international organizations.

Objectives

The learning outcomes corresponds to level 7 of the European Qualifications Framework for lifelong learning?(EQF) in accordance with the Framework for Qualifications of the European Higher Education Area. The conclusion of the course involves a systematic and comprehensive understanding of International, European and Comparative law, the domain of its own techniques of these areas of law, as well the research methodologies in Legal Science in general and in the field of International, European and Comparative Legal Science in particular. Graduates will be capable of critical analysis, evaluation and synthesis of new and complex ideas and to implement processes of research, with scholarly integrity in International, European and Comparative Law, within academic and professional contexts, contributing to technological, social or cultural advancement in a knowledge based society. 

Diploma or Certificate Awarded

This degree leads to a master's degree in European and Comparative Law (120 ECTS) or, at the end of the first year, a specialisation in European and Comparative Law (60 ECTS).

Scientific Areas

The Master is organized in 2 semesters that correspond to the curricular structure, plus 1 year dedicated to the preparation, realization and presentation of a dissertation defense.
The course is equivalent to 60 ECTS for the curricular part and 60 ECTS for the preparation, realization and presentation of the dissertation, which makes a total of 120 ECTS credits in the following scientific areas:

In a direct relationship with the scientific areas and study plan of the Master's in European and Comparative Law, the IJP/ Instituto Jurídico Portucalense is a legal science research center whose main objective is to promote, support and disseminate scientific research in this area of knowledge produced at the Universidade Portucalense and at the Polytechnic Institutes of Leiria and Lisbon, its strategic partners, namely through institutional support for research projects of its researchers and partnerships with similar national and foreign research units.

Who can apply for a Master's degree?

2ND STUDY CYCLE
  • Holders of the bachelor degree or legal equivalent;
  • Holders of a foreign academic degree conferred following a 1st cycle of studies organized according to the principles of the Bologna process by a state that adheres to that process;
  • Holders of a foreign academic degree that is recognized as meeting the objectives of the bachelor degree by the Scientific Council of  Portucalense University;
  • Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum which is recognized by the Scientific Council of Portucalense University as attesting to their ability to undertake this cycle of studies.

Given their academic and professional background, candidates may submit a request for Application for Recognition and Accreditation of Competences, which may confer equivalence to course units of the Master's course. Holders of Pre-Bologna licenciado degree who have more than 5 years of professional experience in the area of the master's degree may request the substitution of the dissertation by a detailed report on the professional activity according to the regulations in force.

  • Own Model, Acknowledgement that the academic degree satisfies the objectives of the degree of licenciado, for the purposes of application to a master's course, requesting prior recognition by the Scientific Council of the access qualification

    Document proving the possession of the foreign higher academic degree with an indication of the final mark (*)
    Detailed certificate of the course units that make up the curricular plan of the academic degree (*)

    (*) The documents must be translated into Portuguese, whenever they are not issued in Portuguese, English, French or Spanish and stamped by the consular service or presented with the Haia Apostille affixed by the competent authority of the State where the document originated.

Change of institution/ course pair and Re-entry

According to the new Portaria nº 181-D/2015 of 19 June, the change of course and transfer has been replaced by a single scheme called "change of institution/course pair".

The change of institution/course pair is not allowed in the academic year in which the student has been placed in a higher education institution/course pair under any access and entry regime and has enrolled and registered.

The change of institution/course pair and the re-entry are requested to the Academic Services Office, using the appropriate form.
