Presentation
Master in various procedural practices
 
In the case of a 2nd cycle, the general objective is the specialization of students graduated in Law.
However, the most fruitful expertise that a licensee can receive is a consistent preparation to professionally in the real life of the courts.
This master’s degree aims to enable the student with the necessary instruments for the practical application of
Law, whose theoretical component was taught in the Licenciatura, assisted by the dynamics of the
procedural law.
On the other hand, the study of the corporal damage (Forensic Traumatology) presents / displays of extraordinary importance in the practice of forensic professions.
 
Why choose this course?

This Master’s degree aims to develop skills in analysing, criticising and evaluating the conceptions of justice underlying the practices, discourses and political, social and forensic institutions that regulate interactions in contemporary society.

During the first year, students will attend a series of courses in Civil Procedure, Criminal Procedure and Misdemeanours, Labour Procedure, Methodology of Legal Research, Bodily Injury, Analysis and Criticism of Case Law, Administrative and Tax Procedure, Insolvency and Recovery Procedure, Contemporary Theories of Justice and Contract Law, which will provide them with a comprehensive and systematic view of procedural law and the contractual universe, enabling them to better perform functions related to the respective target audience.

During the 2nd year and to conclude the cycle, the student must complete a master’s dissertation.

Objectives
With this cycle, students should gain detailed knowledge of that the conflict of law is manifested; What mechanisms exist to resolve disputes, which are the tendencies of judgment of the instances in the various thematic ones in question; What is the most important doctrine?
Influential in the formation of judicial judgment; Sectors which accuse some form of the doctrine and what the courts have set out to address any shortcomings in the formal rules.
With this training, the future master will be able to understand and guide citizens who seek a lawyer; Or to intervene professionally as a magistrate of the public prosecutor or as Judgmental.
This cycle will undoubtedly contribute to an increase in the technical competence of all professionals in the forum.

This diploma leads to a Master’s degree in Forensic Legal Science (120 ECTS) or, with the completion of the 1st year, a Specialization in Forensic Legal Science (60 ECTS).

Scientific Areas

The Master is organized in 2 semesters that correspond to the curricular structure, plus 1 year dedicated to the preparation, realization and presentation of the defense of a dissertation, or project work.
The course is equivalent to 60 ECTS for the curricular part and 60 ECTS for the preparation, realization and presentation of the dissertation, or project work, which makes a total of 120 ECTS credits in the following scientific areas:

In a direct relationship with the scientific areas and study plan of the Master in Law, the IJP/ Instituto Jurídico Portucalense is a legal science research center whose main objective is to promote, support and disseminate scientific research in this area of knowledge produced at the Universidade Portucalense and at the Polytechnic Institutes of Leiria and Lisbon, its strategic partners, namely through institutional support for research projects of its researchers and partnerships with similar national and foreign research units.

Specific Conditions for Admission

Those who meet the conditions set out in Diário da Républica 74/2006 of 26 March, as amended by Decree-Law 115/2013 of 7 August, and the Regulations of the cycle of studies leading to the degree of Master in Forensic Legal Science may apply for admission to this cycle of studies:

  1. holders of a licenciado degree or legal equivalent in Law;
  2. holders of a foreign academic degree conferred in a 1st study cycle in Law organized according to the principles of the Bologna process;
  3. Holders of a foreign higher academic degree that is recognized, satisfying the objectives of the degree of licenciado by the statutorily competent body of the UPT;
  4. Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum, which is recognized by the statutorily competent body of the UPT.
Seriation Criteria

Candidates for access to the 2nd study cycle in Forensic Legal Science are ranked on the basis of merit according to the weighted average, as per the table in Annex II of the Regulatory Norms.

Who can apply for a Master's degree?
2ND STUDY CYCLE
  • Holders of the bachelor degree or legal equivalent;
  • Holders of a foreign academic degree conferred following a 1st cycle of studies organized according to the principles of the Bologna process by a state that adheres to that process;
  • Holders of a foreign academic degree that is recognized as meeting the objectives of the bachelor degree by the Scientific Council of  Portucalense University;
  • Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum which is recognized by the Scientific Council of Portucalense University as attesting to their ability to undertake this cycle of studies.

Given their academic and professional background, candidates may submit a request for Application for Recognition and Accreditation of Competences, which may confer equivalence to course units of the Master’s course. Holders of Pre-Bologna licenciado degree who have more than 5 years of professional experience in the area of the master’s degree may request the substitution of the dissertation by a detailed report on the professional activity according to the regulations in force.
