Presentation

The Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology and Counseling is part of the educational, scientific and cultural project of Portucalense University. This Doctoral Program is carried out within an international reference framework, based on the centrality of clinical research and its close articulation with teaching and the enhancement of knowledge.

The partnerships that underlie this Doctoral Program are designed to create scale, generate synergies and increase the development of students' research capacities, in order to allow them to successfully contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge.

This Doctoral Program is based on collaboration between the Research Center and the Department of Psychology and Education and aims to promote the development of doctoral works at the highest level, namely in the areas of Clinical Research, Counseling and Applied Neurosciences - for which there is, in a consolidated way, research with competitive funding, doctoral professors with indicators of scientific merit (in terms of scientific production, participation in funded projects and pedagogical guidance) who are capable of providing effective and technical support in the accomplishment of the candidates' research work.

Objectives

The Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology and Counseling (3 Years) aims to:

  1. Provide an advanced training in clinical research, from a theoretical and methodological perspective, enabling the resolution of innovative, significant and highly relevant research problems for this field of study;
  2. Promote the necessary conditions to perform original research in the Field of Psychology, closely associated with INPP´s research projects and within INPP’s main research lines;
  3. Promote scientific networks with other national and international relevant researchers and research centers of psychology and related areas;
  4. Encourage the communication and dissemination of scientific research through the appropriate scientific channels (e.g. international indexed scientific journals, scientific meetings, among others).

Diploma or Certificate Awarded

The present diploma confers the qualification in Doctorate in Clinical Psychology and Counselling (180 ECTS) or, with the conclusion of the 1st year, Advanced Studies in Clinical Psychology and Counselling (60 ECTS).

The research activities of doctoral students are framed within research projects already under development at INPP/ Instituto de Desenvolvimento Humano Portucalense,

organized into a set of thematic areas that aggregate research interests: Clinical Psychology, Counselling and Human Development and Applied Neurosciences. Its orientation is ensured by a highly qualified teaching staff, trained and developed within the most current academic and scientific paradigms, and coordinated through the action of the scientific coordination committee of the study cycle, which ensures the constant monitoring of activities and the resolution of all emerging issues within its implementation.

The course benefits from the support of a research centre endowed with the human and material resources necessary for the implementation of the research work, as well as the resources of other laboratories and partner centres, with which INPP researchers work in collaboration.

The PhD theses will fit into funded research projects that are being developed by consolidated groups and integrated in R&D units with an internationally recognised body of knowledge in the area of the study programme.

Admission Conditions

Anyone who meets the conditions laid down in DL 74/2006, as amended by DL 176/2016, and in the Study Cycle Regulations approved by the proponent University may apply to this study cycle:

  1. Hold a Master's degree or legal equivalent in Psychology or related areas of Health Sciences and Education;
  2. Candidates in other circumstances (e.g., self-proposed candidates according to Article 21 of the General Regulation of Third Cycles of Portucalense University) will be considered in the light of the General Regulation of Third Cycles of Portucalense University;
  3. Holders of a degree in Psychology (corresponding to a minimum of 300 ECTS) and possessing a school or scientific curriculum, especially relevant in the specific area of the study cycle, that is recognized by the Scientific Council, under proposal of the Department of Psychology and Education, as attesting the capacity to carry out the study cycle;
  4. Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum especially relevant in the specific area of the cycle of studies or related areas, which is recognized by the Scientific Board, under proposal of the Board of the Department of Psychology and Education, as attesting the capacity to carry out the cycle of studies.

Selection/Seriation Criteria

The candidates are selected and ranked by the Coordinator of the cycle of studies, in descending order, according to the final classification calculated by applying the criteria and respective weighting presented in Annex II, of the present  Regulations.

Scientific Areas

The Doctorate is organized in 2 semesters that correspond to the curricular structure, plus 2 years dedicated to the preparation, realization and presentation of a thesis defense.
The course is equivalent to 60 ECTS for the curricular part and 120 ECTS for the preparation, realization and presentation of the thesis, which makes a total of 180 ECTS in the following scientific areas:

The research activities of doctoral students are framed within research projects already under development at INPP/ Instituto de Desenvolvimento Humano Portucalense,

organized into a set of thematic areas that aggregate research interests: Clinical Psychology, Counselling and Human Development and Applied Neurosciences. Its orientation is ensured by a highly qualified teaching staff, trained and developed within the most current academic and scientific paradigms, and coordinated through the action of the scientific coordination committee of the study cycle, which ensures the constant monitoring of activities and the resolution of all emerging issues within its implementation.

The course benefits from the support of a research centre endowed with the human and material resources necessary for the implementation of the research work, as well as the resources of other laboratories and partner centres, with which INPP researchers work in collaboration.

The PhD theses will fit into funded research projects that are being developed by consolidated groups and integrated in R&D units with an internationally recognised body of knowledge in the area of the study programme.

Admission Conditions

Anyone who meets the conditions laid down in DL 74/2006, as amended by DL 176/2016, and in the Study Cycle Regulations approved by the proponent University may apply to this study cycle:

  1. Hold a Master's degree or legal equivalent in Psychology or related areas of Health Sciences and Education;
  2. Candidates in other circumstances (e.g., self-proposed candidates according to Article 21 of the General Regulation of Third Cycles of Portucalense University) will be considered in the light of the General Regulation of Third Cycles of Portucalense University;
  3. Holders of a degree in Psychology (corresponding to a minimum of 300 ECTS) and possessing a school or scientific curriculum, especially relevant in the specific area of the study cycle, that is recognized by the Scientific Council, under proposal of the Department of Psychology and Education, as attesting the capacity to carry out the study cycle;
  4. Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum especially relevant in the specific area of the cycle of studies or related areas, which is recognized by the Scientific Board, under proposal of the Board of the Department of Psychology and Education, as attesting the capacity to carry out the cycle of studies.

Selection/Seriation Criteria

The candidates are selected and ranked by the Coordinator of the cycle of studies, in descending order, according to the final classification calculated by applying the criteria and respective weighting presented in Annex II, of the present  Regulations.
