Universidade Portucalense, through Cultura@Portucalense and the Department of Tourism, Heritage, and Culture, celebrates International Museum Day on 28 May, with the Talk “Museums, Education, and Research.”

Fátima Silva, the coordinator of the Cultura@Portucalense project, contextualizes: “Museums are more than mere repositories of ancient objects, because they are living spaces where education and research intertwine and invite people to rethink education and imagine a future where the sharing of knowledge overcomes barriers, where innovation meets tradition.”

Stemming from this premise, Álvaro Moreira (director of the Abade Pedrosa Municipal Museum, the Santo Tirso International Museum of Contemporary Sculpture, and the Alberto Carneiro Art Centre), Patrícia Remelgado (museologist), Maria da Luz Nolasco (curator of the Aveiro/Santa Joana Princesa Museum), and João Neto (president of the Portuguese Museology Association and director of the Pharmacy Museum), are invited to analyse the museum in the dimensions of education, art, and therapy, and to reflect on the challenges facing museology.

It should be emphasised that this year’s International Museum Day theme, proposed by ICOM International – Museums, Education, and Research, highlights “the fundamental role of cultural institutions in offering a holistic educational experience” to foster a more aware, sustainable, and inclusive world, within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), highlighting those related to Quality Education (SDG4) and Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure (SDG9).
