The Master’s in Informatics and Computer Engineering aims to respond to the current challenges of Digital Transformation regarding the use of mobile devices, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud computing. In this way, this 2nd cycle of studies will develop skills that will enable masters to deal with the complexity of information processing systems.
According to the ACM’s “Computing Curricula 2020 CC2020 Paradigms for Global Computing Education” (p. 31), the master’s course falls within the emerging curricular areas that include “cloud computing, smart cities, sustainability, parallel computing, internet of things, and edge computing. Additionally, the predicted top-ten emerging computing trends are: deep learning (DL) and machine learning (ML), industrial IoT, and AI”. The course allows students to make individual achievements in the development of technical and behavioral skills. These skills will be worked on throughout the first and second academic year. On the other hand, in order to enhance the development of students in real work contexts, strategic partnerships have also been set up with various companies.
As is typical of DCT courses, proximity teaching is offered, guaranteeing quality training and consequently success in the placement of master’s students.

It is intended that master students acquire, with the necessary proficiency, advanced Informatics Engineering and Computation technical and behavioural competencies and can use them to anticipate, prevent and resolve complex problems. More specifically, they can perform professional roles indicated in the European ICT Professional Role Profiles that require competencies at level e-4 (masters) of the European e-Competence Framework.
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
- Select and use appropriate technologies and programming ling. for Informatics Engineering and Computation;
- Organise and use large volumes of data, structured and unstructured, efficiently and securely;
- Design algorithms to improve data analysis, processing and visualisation;
- Design and implement scalable solutions using Cloud Computing;
- Design IoT applications in Fog and Edge environment;
- Communicate conclusions and reasoning clearly;
- Work collaboratively.

Digital Transformation and Innovation in Organisations (DTIO)
Digital transformation is today an imperative in an ecosystem where different organisations compete and interact. The research group seeks to study and promote the emerging and innovative use, and adoption and exploitation, of information technologies in different organisational and social contexts, as well as in driving digitalisation efforts at all levels of organisations. The group develops informed knowledge (e.g. models, methods, techniques, tools and applications) to embrace innovation and digitisation in organisations. It is also investigated how the development of digital transformation and innovation in organisations promotes the sustainability of different activities and what is the importance of education in this context of change. Given the interdisciplinary nature of its lines of action, the research group also works closely with other research groups, namely at the level of data analysis and development of decision support systems.

- Holders of a bachelor’s degree or legal equivalent, including the possibilities provided for in subparagraphs b), c) and d) of paragraph 1, of Article 17, of the Legal Regime of Academic Degrees and Diplomas of Higher Education, published through Decree-Law No. 74/2006 of March 24, amended by Decree-Law No. 63/2016 of September 13 and amended/republished by Decree-Law No. 65/2018 of August 16. Candidates holding foreign qualifications should consult the regulations in force.
- Candidates must demonstrate basic academic training considered sufficient to follow the course; otherwise the Technical-Scientific Committee of the department may determine the completion of complementary curricular units, existing in the Department of Science and Technology.
- The selection and seriation criteria are set out in the University of Portucalense’s Regulation of Studies Leading to the Degree of Master of the University of Portucalense and in the Regulatory Norms of the course.
Candidates for access to the 2nd study cycle in Informatics Engineering and Computation are ranked on the basis of merit according to the weighted average, as per Annex II, of the Regulatory Norms for the 2nd cycle in Informatics Engineering and Computation.

2ND STUDY CYCLE
- Holders of the bachelor degree or legal equivalent;
- Holders of a foreign academic degree conferred following a 1st cycle of studies organized according to the principles of the Bologna process by a state that adheres to that process;
- Holders of a foreign academic degree that is recognized as meeting the objectives of the bachelor degree by the Scientific Council of Portucalense University;
- Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum which is recognized by the Scientific Council of Portucalense University as attesting to their ability to undertake this cycle of studies.
Given their academic and professional background, candidates may submit a request for Application for Recognition and Accreditation of Competences, which may confer equivalence to course units of the Master’s course. Holders of Pre-Bologna licenciado degree who have more than 5 years of professional experience in the area of the master’s degree may request the substitution of the dissertation by a detailed report on the professional activity according to the regulations in force.
