Student Observatory: monitoring students' development, adaptation and academic success

The Student Observatory, to be created within the scope of the Office of Pedagogical Innovation (GIP), is a structure for collecting, analysing and disseminating data on students at Universidade Portucalense, monitoring their progress from the transition to the 1st year of higher education until their entry into the labour market. This structure aims to ensure continuous and informed monitoring of students’ academic and personal development paths, promoting an institutional culture of support for inclusion, retention and academic success.

The Observatory aims to contribute to improving the quality of teaching and pedagogical practices, informing student support policies and strategies based on concrete, reliable and representative data.

Objectives

Systematic and longitudinal collection of student data

Monitor, over time, students’ adaptation, engagement, personal development, and academic success, based on data collected in person at key moments in their academic careers.

Identification and characterisation of risk profiles for failure and dropout

Use data analysis to identify early on students at greater risk of failure or dropout, informing the definition of more effective support strategies.

Assessment of the impacts of higher education on skills development

Assess, throughout the academic career, the impact of the university experience on the development of transversal skills and academic performance.

Internal dissemination of results and coordination with educational agents

Produce periodic reports, organised by course, department and student profile, to inform and adjust teaching and academic counselling practices.

Promotion of training on risk factors and strategies for promoting success

Empowering teachers, students, and institutional decision-makers to detect difficulties early on and promote a more inclusive, evidence-based university environment.
