Students will be able to:
interact with clients and professionals in the tourist industry in common situations
ask questions to find out clients' requirements
understand what clients say
speak with colleagues and other professionals to achieve necessary outcomes to deliver required services
understand forms, information documents, rules & regulations and other documents relevant to obligations of tourism professionals
understand written requests from clients and colleagues
respond to written requests; draft working documents for colleagues

Recommended Prerequisites

Students should be at level B1 of the CEFR so they can build on existing knowledge and skills to achieve B2 level by the end of the academic year, when they will have completed Inglês Técnico IV.

Teaching Metodology

This is a highly practical course, with examples of appropriate speaking and writing, which students will emulate, perfecting their own abilities by practising and redrafting.
Reading and listening will be approached through authentic texts, such as articles and documents, that are found in the hospitality and tourism industry.
Students will work in groups and alone to produce written and spoken material, improve versions and eventually submit these for assessment.

Body of Work

The course consists of a range of authentic texts and listening materials, which students interact with and emulate in their own work.

Weekly Planning

Week 1
Using technology: accessing the Internet through mobile devices, downloading listening and reading material, uploading speaking and writing. Assuring that any new students who have joined since Inglês Técnico I or II are familiar with what is required.
Introductions: name and one unusual thing about self.
Greetings in different cutlures; introducing tourist guides to group.
Singapore & Cape Town
Speaking: Car hire dialogue.
Writing: places of interest in another country.

Week 2
Hotel types; checking in; client requirements and hotel services.
Where things are in a hotel.
Hotel staff structure.
Speaking: pair work interviewing different people about the details of their job.
Writing: hotel guide for new guests.

Week 3
Giving directions to tourists: listening, then practice with role cards.
Tourist information centres.
Recommending places.
Speaking: dialogues giving directions and other information.
Vocabulary: buildings and other features in town and country; prepositions of place.

Week 4
Holiday representative.
What the job entails; the type of person required.
Types of resort; activities involved.
Tipping and other customs.
Dialogues: pair work reading, substituting then recording own versions.
Writing: recording necessary phrases.

Week 5
Common complaints, diseases and allergies.
Visas and other requirements.

Week 6
Different types of food on offer.
Taking orders in restaurant.

The materials used are taken from authentic texts, written and spoken, which students are likely to meet in their future jobs. Practice will develop the language skills they will require.
