Teachers collaborate in the Urban Renewal of Pico

Rui Florentino and Telma Ribeiro, teachers of the Department of Architecture and Multimedia Gallaecia (DAMG), participated in the “Azores Traditional Architecture Summer School”, between 11 and 24 July, in Lajes do Pico, Azores.

In this Summer School, which involved 30 participants from all over the world, the two teachers presented the results of the research project “3D Past – Living & Virtual Visiting European World Heritage”, supported by the Creative Europe program and developed under the coordination of the teacher Mariana Correia, Director of DAMG, whose national case study was the cultural landscape of Pico Island.

This initiative is organized in the scope of the Rafael Manzano Prize for New Traditional Architecture in Spain and Portugal. After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the course returned this summer.

Set up in the centre of Lajes do Pico, the participants studied the island’s traditional architecture in the first few days, through many drawings of the organisation of the urban space, its buildings, construction processes and materials.

Armed with this knowledge, and with the guidance of teachers of various nationalities, the students made proposals for the renovation of the central area of Lajes, which served as the basis for an exhibition open to the entire community, always seeking to keep alive the architectural traditions of the place.
