Presentation

The Master in Artistic Heritage, Conservation and Restoration aims to provide students with a deepening of the skills acquired, thus promoting the continuity of training.
This course articulates solid scientific knowledge with practical situations in a work context, offering individualised, multi and interdisciplinary training. It is, in this way, closely linked to the professional reality, in these areas of knowledge that are in permanent change, and updating is a constant necessity.
It offers specialisations in various research areas proposing student participation in projects based on innovative partnerships, enhancing critical reflection in scientific research in Artistic Heritage, Conservation and Restoration.
Its association with several projects from different areas constitutes an innovative element in the valuation and safeguarding of the Heritage.

In its training project, it has the support of the Conservation and Restoration Clinic where students can come into contact with works in restoration and in the process of conservation. In this space the students will also be able to develop their research project, internship or practical project, making contact with equipment and strategic partnerships.

Why choose this Course?

Every day we come across different types of situations in which the Portuguese Heritage, Our Heritage, is the target of the most diverse situations of neglect, abandonment, destruction .... Often due to a lack of knowledge, a lack of solid and adequate training for the various situations of conservation and intervention! We are indignant, but we can do more.

The Master in Artistic Heritage, Conservation and Restoration, addressed to the most diverse types of professionals working in various areas related to the Heritage, is a full response and is undoubtedly one of the ways to prevent many of the situations less worthy of Our Heritage! In this sense, in this course, the theoretical themes also deal with the valuation of heritage and its authenticity, in order to enhance the application of ethical principles, namely in the criteria for intervention and safeguarding heritage, articulating solid scientific knowledge with the analysis of practical situations in a real work context.

Research into the various factors of degradation (such as climate change and other risks) is also valued in order to create conditions for protecting and safeguarding heritage, both in museums and in cities, and in the various regions where our heritage proliferates.

It is thus intended to develop basic skills in the design, implementation and evaluation of research projects in Artistic Heritage and Conservation and Restoration in order to develop decision-making and technical skills, in a process that aims at the growing autonomy of master students and that contributes to the conservation and intervention of Our Heritage.

Objectives

The learning objectives of the 2nd study cycle in Artistic Heritage Conservation and Restoration are

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of the guidelines issued by the European area concerning training in Conservation and Restoration;
  2. Demonstrate skills for developing an individual and autonomous work according to the international norms and guidelines issued for Conservation and Restoration;
  3. Demonstrate teamwork and communication skills;
  4. Know theoretical knowledge to enable the approach to new issues and the resolution of problems posed in conservation and restoration in the specialty areas of painting, ceramics and tiles;
  5. Knowing the research methodologies for the design and implementation of research projects in the field of Artistic Heritage and Conservation and Restoration;
  6. Master the development of management skills and project leadership in the different strands of research and services.

Diploma or Certificate Awarded

The present diploma confers the qualification in Master's Degree in Artistic Heritage Conservation and Restoration (120 ECTS) or, with the conclusion of the 1st year, Specialization in Artistic Heritage Conservation and Restoration (60 ECTS).

The Master is organized in 2 semesters that correspond to the curricular structure, plus 1 more year dedicated to the preparation, realization and presentation of the defense of a dissertation, internship report or project work.

Specific Conditions for Admission

Candidates may apply to the cycle of studies leading to the degree of master are those who hold a:

  1. Bachelor's degree or legal equivalent in Conservation, Restoration, History, History of Art, Social Sciences and Humanities and related areas;
  2. Holders of a foreign higher academic degree, conferred after a 1st cycle of studies in Conservation, Restoration, History, History of Art, Social Sciences and Humanities and related areas, organized according to the principles of the Bologna Process by a State that adheres to this Process;
  3. Holders of a foreign higher academic degree in Conservation, Restoration, History, Art History, Social and Human Sciences and related areas, which the Scientific Council recognizes as fulfilling the objectives of the degree;
  4. Applicants holding an academic, scientific or professional curriculum vitae that the Scientific Council recognizes as attesting the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies.

Who can apply for a Master's degree?

2ND STUDY CYCLE
  • Holders of the bachelor degree or legal equivalent;
  • Holders of a foreign academic degree conferred following a 1st cycle of studies organized according to the principles of the Bologna process by a state that adheres to that process;
  • Holders of a foreign academic degree that is recognized as meeting the objectives of the bachelor degree by the Scientific Council of  Portucalense University;
  • Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum which is recognized by the Scientific Council of Portucalense University as attesting to their ability to undertake this cycle of studies.

Given their academic and professional background, candidates may submit a request for Application for Recognition and Accreditation of Competences, which may confer equivalence to course units of the Master's course. Holders of Pre-Bologna licenciado degree who have more than 5 years of professional experience in the area of the master's degree may request the substitution of the dissertation by a detailed report on the professional activity according to the regulations in force.

Specific Conditions for Admission

Candidates may apply to the cycle of studies leading to the degree of master are those who hold a:

  1. Bachelor's degree or legal equivalent in Conservation, Restoration, History, History of Art, Social Sciences and Humanities and related areas;
  2. Holders of a foreign higher academic degree, conferred after a 1st cycle of studies in Conservation, Restoration, History, History of Art, Social Sciences and Humanities and related areas, organized according to the principles of the Bologna Process by a State that adheres to this Process;
  3. Holders of a foreign higher academic degree in Conservation, Restoration, History, Art History, Social and Human Sciences and related areas, which the Scientific Council recognizes as fulfilling the objectives of the degree;
  4. Applicants holding an academic, scientific or professional curriculum vitae that the Scientific Council recognizes as attesting the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies.

Seriation Criteria

The candidates to access the Master in Artistic Heritage, Conservation and Restoration will be ranked on the basis of the weighted average of the Norms and Regulations

Who can apply for a Master's degree?

2ND STUDY CYCLE
  • Holders of the bachelor degree or legal equivalent;
  • Holders of a foreign academic degree conferred following a 1st cycle of studies organized according to the principles of the Bologna process by a state that adheres to that process;
  • Holders of a foreign academic degree that is recognized as meeting the objectives of the bachelor degree by the Scientific Council of  Portucalense University;
  • Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum which is recognized by the Scientific Council of Portucalense University as attesting to their ability to undertake this cycle of studies.

Given their academic and professional background, candidates may submit a request for Application for Recognition and Accreditation of Competences, which may confer equivalence to course units of the Master's course. Holders of Pre-Bologna licenciado degree who have more than 5 years of professional experience in the area of the master's degree may request the substitution of the dissertation by a detailed report on the professional activity according to the regulations in force.

  • Original or certified copy of the document proving the possession of the higher academic degree (except for UPT candidates) (*);

Application documentation for holders of a foreign higher education degree

  • Own Model, Acknowledgement that the academic degree satisfies the objectives of the degree of licenciado, for the purposes of application to a master's course, requesting prior recognition by the Scientific Council of the access qualification
    Identification document
    Photograph, passport type
    Document proving the possession of the foreign higher academic degree with an indication of the final mark (*)
    Detailed certificate of the course units that make up the curricular plan of the academic degree (*)
    Updated CV

    (*) The documents must be translated into Portuguese, whenever they are not issued in Portuguese, English, French or Spanish and stamped by the consular service or presented with the Haia Apostille affixed by the competent authority of the State where the document originated.

Re-entry

Documentation for Re-entry application:

  • Identification document;
  • Passport type photo;
  • Application for recognition and crediting of skills, according to the regulations in force, if you wish to apply for the equivalence of skills other than those acquired in the course for which you are re-entering.
