Presentation

Professional development and training in the teaching profession are very important not only to improve performance, but also to provide answers to the specific training needs that arise in the teaching profession.  Recently, teachers’ roles and duties in the schools have become more demanding and complex, such as required by the roles of Head of the Department and School Principals.

Specialized training has also been recognized in the legal education frameworks, which clearly emphasize the importance of the field of educational administration and management to help teaching professionals to deal with the different and challenging roles which they must face in schools, today more than ever.

The Master programme has been accredited by the A3ES.

The Programme is relevant for the purpose of career progression, in terms of article 54 of Decree-Law No. 75/2010 of 23 June (Statute of Teaching Careers for Child Educators and Teachers of Basic and Secondary Education), for those who already have five years of teaching experience when entering the programme.

It is also formally recognized as specialized training in Educational Administration and Management by the Scientific and Pedagogical Council of Continuing Education (Accreditation Registration: CCPFC/CFE-3130/17). The curricular part of the Master programme corresponds to 12 credits of ongoing training.

Why choose this course?

In order to promote the students' personal and professional skills that are required to developing effective responses to the growing and more complex demands of the labor market (both in terms of research and intervention practices), this cycle of studies offers a training that associates the transmission of sound scientific knowledge withthe analyses of practical and real situations taken from work contexts. Special attention is given to the management in educational contexts and to all the procedures that are attached to this practice.

The master programme is formally recognized as specialized training in Educational Administration and Management by the Scientific and Pedagogical Council of Continuing Education (Accreditation Registration: CCPFC/CFE-3130/17),). The curricular part of the Master programme corresponds to 12 credits of ongoing training.

Objectives

The objectives of the 2nd cycle of studies in Educational Administration and Management are:

  • to perform tasks in the field of educational administration and management, school leadership and also pedagogic, academic and financial management of educational establishments.
  • to understand the organizational dynamics of schools according to a scientific perspective and according to the analysis of the main theories and models of school organization.
  • to apply scientific research methodologies to study organizational processes and practices, leadership and administrative and pedagogical management of educational establishments.
  • to develop skills for promoting educational innovation and intervention in the school context, taking into account the contributions of research in education.
  • to develop skills that allow life-long learning, in a self-oriented or autonomous way, based on a professional development perspective.

Diploma or Certificate Awarded

This diploma confers the qualification in the Master's Degree in Educational Administration and Management (120 ECTS) or, with the completion of the 1st year, the Specialization in Educational Administration and Management (60 ECTS).

This Master Programme is relevant for the purpose of career progression, in terms of article 54 of Decree-Law No. 75/2010 of 23 June (Statute of Teaching Careers for Child Educators and Teachers of Basic and Secondary Education).

The Master is organized in 2 semesters that correspond to the curricular structure, plus 1 year dedicated to the preparation, realization and presentation of the defense of a dissertation, or internship report or project work.
The course is equivalent to 60 ECTS to the curricular part and 60 ECTS to the preparation, realization and presentation of the dissertation, or internship report or project work, which makes a total of 120 ECTS credits in the following scientific areas:

The Masters programme includes the following research areas:

1 - Management and Innovation in the School context
In this research group, research is focused on the relationship between management and innovation, giving special attention to issues such as the models of school management, strategies to overcome school failure and teacher training.

2 - Evaluation in the Educational context
In this research group, the main theme is evaluation considering three aspects: school evaluation / institutional evaluation, student assessment and evaluation of teaching performance (performance appraisal).

3 - Autonomy, Management and Leadership
In this research group, projects focus on themes such as leadership, conflict management and school and family relationships.

  1. Admission to the application to the course of Administration and Management of Education is governed by the conditions laid down in paragraph 1 of Article 17 of D.L. No. 74/2006 of 24 March amended by D.L. No. 107/2008 of 25 June and by DL No. 115/2013 of 7 August.
  2. Applicants to the course must have previous training in the area of Education Sciences or professional experience in education / training.

Seriation Criteria

The candidates to access the 2nd study cycle in Educational Administration and Management will be ranked according to the merit resulting from the weighted average, as per Annex I of the Regulatory Norms.

Who can apply for a Master's degree?

2ND STUDY CYCLE
  • Holders of the bachelor degree or legal equivalent;
  • Holders of a foreign academic degree conferred following a 1st cycle of studies organized according to the principles of the Bologna process by a state that adheres to that process;
  • Holders of a foreign academic degree that is recognized as meeting the objectives of the bachelor degree by the Scientific Council of  Portucalense University;
  • Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum which is recognized by the Scientific Council of Portucalense University as attesting to their ability to undertake this cycle of studies.

Given their academic and professional background, candidates may submit a request for Application for Recognition and Accreditation of Competences, which may confer equivalence to course units of the Master's course. Holders of Pre-Bologna licenciado degree who have more than 5 years of professional experience in the area of the master's degree may request the substitution of the dissertation by a detailed report on the professional activity according to the regulations in force.
