Presentation
The study programme has been designed in accordance with the concept of “Industrial PhD”.
The doctoral students will be investigating the solution to a problem of a company. They may be employees of a partner company, of another company, or not be affiliated to a company. If the candidates are not employees of a company, they will be placed in one of the partner companies to perform their applied research. In this process, the protection of knowledge as property of the companies involved will be guaranteed. 
During the first semester, the students will discuss with the Course Coordinator the business problem to solve and the related theme to develop, that will be their research problem. The Coordinator will guide them in the selection of the two optional curricular units that they will attend, which are intended to provide them with intellectual and technical skills for the treatment of the particular subject in question.

Objectives
The course is directed to management professionals, seeking to provide them with skills that allow th em to develop and apply advanced knowledge to specific issues, improving the quality of decision-making.

  • Promote the advancement of knowledge in business sciences (BS)
  • Develop a research project according to a company’s concrete problem with the creation of value
  • Apply research methods in BS
  • Examine critically new and com plex ideas within BS
  • Develop autonomous, original and applied work with in the framework of BS
  • Contribute to the interdisciplinary discussion on BS
  • Promote and interact with the academic community , companies and society in general about the implications and conclusions of the research conducted
  • Promote the dissemination of knowledge, safeguarding the relevant intellectual property.
Diploma or Certificate Awarded

The present diploma grants a Doctorate in Business Science (180 ECTS) or, with the conclusion of the 1st year, Advanced Studies in Business Science (60 ECTS).

Scientific Areas

The Doctorate is organized in 2 semesters that correspond to the curricular structure, plus 2 years dedicated to the preparation, realization and presentation of a thesis defense.
The course is equivalent to 60 ECTS for the curricular part and 120 ECTS for the preparation, realization and presentation of the thesis, which makes a total of 180 ECTS in the following scientific areas:

Note: The optional CUs available will be defined annually by the Department Direction.

The doctoral students will be integrated into REMIT – Research on Economics, Management and Information Technologies,

UPT’s own research unit. REMIT aims to produce theoretical and applied knowledge that enables a greater understanding of economic, business, territorial and technological dynamics and trends in the contemporary world and their socio-economic effects, contributing to the design, implementation and evaluation of organisational strategies and public policies.

REMIT has experienced significant growth since its creation in 2017, evident in the number of researchers, publications and competitively funded projects.

The positive evolution of REMIT was recognized, at the end of 2019, by the FCT evaluation panel through the attribution of a GOOD rating in the last evaluation exercise. This evaluation translated into the obtaining of 512 thousand euros of funding, in the basic and programmatic components, as well as the awarding of two PhD scholarships.

Admission Conditions

The candidate must have competencies in the area of business sciences (BS), acquired through academic and/or professional pathway. More specifically, you must satisfy one of the following conditions

  1. hold a Master’s degree or legal equivalent in the area of BS;
  2. to hold a degree in BS or a degree or master’s in engineering, and to hold a professional/scientific curriculum in the management area, with a minimum of 5 years of experience, and recognised as attesting the capacity to carry out the course by the Scientific Council of the UPT.

Candidates will be selected by the Scientific Committee (SC) of the course, considering:

  • classification in degrees held;
  • professional experience;
  • motivation for attending the course and proficiency in English (specified in the course regulations).

The SC may resort to an interview to assess motivation and fit into the philosophy of the course:

  • research oriented towards the solution of concrete management problems.
Selection/Seriation Criteria

Candidates to the 3rd cycle in Business Studies are selected and ranked by the Coordination of the study cycle, in descending order, according to the final classification calculated by applying the criteria and respective weighting presented in Annex II of these Regulations.

The Application Process must be completed with

  1. Application form, duly completed;
  2. Documents proving that the candidate meets the conditions for candidacy;
  3. Originals or certified copies;
  4. Detailed and updated Curriculum Vitae;
  5. Identification document
    Up-to-date colour photograph;
  6. Other documents indicated in the regulations of the course to which the applicant is applying;
  7. Other documents that the candidate considers useful (namely a Letter of Motivation/Intent – draft for the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology and Counselling – and also required for the Doctorate in Business Administration). If you wish to apply for equivalences:

  • Application for Recognition and Creditation of Competences in accordance with regulations in force (including syllabus contents and hour loads of the subjects to which equivalence is to be requested and discriminative certificate (*) (**)with the grades obtained).

(*) These documents must be authenticated according to the legislation in force (Decree-Law 28 of 13/03/2000).

(**) The documents must be translated into Portuguese, whenever they are not issued in Portuguese, English, French or Spanish and stamped by the consular service or presented with the Hague Apostille affixed by the competent authority of the State from which the document originated. Adds 

Re-entry

Re-entries are requested to the Direction of Admission and Student Support Services, using the appropriate form.

  • Application for recognition and creditation of competences, according to the regulations in force, in case the student intends to apply for the equivalence of competences other than those acquired in the course to which he/she re-enters.
Scholarships

The Doctoral Programme in Business Sciences of Universidade Portucalense has two scholarships (with a maximum duration of 48 months), funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), to be awarded to full-time students.

Universidade Portucalense also offers a set of scholarships for the doctoral programmes in Legal Sciences and in Clinical Psychology and Counselling that cover the tuition fees. All candidates to these doctoral programmes are automatically eligible for these scholarships after formal enrolment. The number of scholarships to be awarded, together with the award criteria will be defined in due time, in a specific dispatch.
