Portuguese Language Laboratory 2017/2018

Objectives

1 To identify information needs and recognize information sources and resources;
2 To distinguish between scientific, literary and informative resources;
3 To know and apply strategies for the identification, evaluation and selection of scientific information;
4 To know and apply storage, management and presentation technics of the information retrieved;
5 To understand the importance of ethics and responsible use of information;
6 To know how to conceive a scientific text and identify the best ways to communicate it;
7 To identify and apply citation and reference styles;
8 To master the Portuguese language as cognition tool and efficiently use it to interpret texts and communicate it in oral and written speeches.

Teaching Metodology

In this course, an active teaching methodology with the use of teaching and learning strategies that provide student engagement will be implemented. Specifically, they will value them expository teaching methods for the presentation of theoretical frameworks; participatory, for the analysis and resolution of cases; assets, with the completion of individual work, group dynamics and involving research and study / self-employment. The exhibition component will still be supported with practical examples, analysis of real cases and preparation of practical exercises. In short, the classes will combine the exhibition methods, with the formal presentation of content and interactive, focusing on the analysis and resolution of cases, independent work, group dynamics, peer work and debate.

Body of Work

1. Information: nature, media, organization, sources and forms of use.
2. Information resources: search, retrieval and evaluation technics and strategies.
3. Introduction to academic work. Copyright law and information ethics. Citations and references applying reference styles and bibliographic managers.
4. Systematization and communication of information: language as a means of communication. The channel, the media and the code. Meaning and signs. Styles and strategies of communication.
5. Reading technics interpretation, commentary and discussion of academic and non-academic writing.
6. Communicating scientific information: scientific writing, structure and design technics of the academic work. Software for text editing and spelling and grammar checkers. Oral communication: oral and mixed presentations. Oral expression technics and communication with different publics.

Weekly Planning

Week 1:
• Presentation of the course: objectives, structure, evaluation, faculty members; nature and concepts of information and scientific information: general introduction.
Week 2:
What is information? What is a document? Presentation and analysis of different types of information supports, sources, and contents.
Primary and secondary, internal and external information sources. Information structure and organization regarding the different types of supports, contents, goals and intended public.
Self-discovery and manipulation of different types of documents and debate.
Organization of class teams and preparation of a reading club.
Week 3:
What is information retrieval? Information research strategies and technics. Internet free search versus controlled search in scientific databases.
How to identify an information need? How to define search expressions?
Cinema session.
Week 4:
Introduction to academic work. Social responsibility and information ethics. Quotations and references according to APA style. Reference Managers. Plagiarism and how to avoyd it.
Reding Club.
Week 5:
• Contexts and communication needs;
• The communication process;
• Discussion of the importance of knowing the structure and functioning of the Portuguese language within the degree and in the future context;
• the channel, the means and the code;
• The significance and signs;
• Analysis of cases and practical exercises.
Reading club.
    Week 6:
• Reading, interpretation, comment and discussion technics. Reading exercises. Inverted class through the reading club.
    Week 7:
The scholarly communication: scientific writing. The structure and design of an academic work. Literature review. Communication according to different publics. Exercises: abstracts, literature review, including quotations and refrences.

Constructing a wiki on the subject chosen for the curricular unit.

Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the curricular unit's objectives

To comply with the objective 1, Mastering the Portuguese as cognition tool and as a means of communication with others, they will be worked out the contents 4.1, 4.2, 4.3 and 4.4. Objective 2, demonstrate mastery of the techniques of oral communication, will be working with the content 5.1, 5.2 and 5.3. The objective 3, Show communication skills written, in order to effectively operate in a variety of personal and professional situations, applying the knowledge of the structure and language of the operation, cover the content 6.1, 6.2, 6.5, 6.6 and 6.7. The objective 4, understand the importance of joint communication in the professional context includes the contents 7.1 and 7.2. To achieve the goal 5 Applying search techniques, organization and synthesis of information, will work them content 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 and 3.1. Finally, to achieve the goal 6, shall study the contents-5.4 and 5.5.

Demonstration of the teaching methodologies coherence with the curricular unit's objectives

So that students can meet all the learning objectives will be implemented, an active teaching methodology with the use of teaching and learning strategies that provide student involvement. Specifically, they will appreciate them expository teaching methods for the presentation of theoretical frameworks; participatory, for the analysis and resolution of cases; active with doing individual work, group dynamics and involving research and study / self-employment. Thus, for the purpose 1 (Mastering the Portuguese as cognition tool and as a means of communication with others), will be referred to group dynamics. In turn, to comply with the objective 2 (Demonstrate mastery of the techniques of oral communication), will be privileged discussion, group dynamics, interpersonal skills, conflict management techniques and evaluation by pairs. In Objective 3 (Show communication skills written, in order to effectively operate in a variety of personal and professional situations, applying the knowledge of the structure and functioning of the language), will be value the independent work, team work, the analysis and resolution of cases. In turn, the 4 (Understanding the importance of joint communication in a professional context.), Highlight will be the conflict management skills, interpersonal skills, teamwork and peer review. In goal 5 (Apply research techniques, organization and synthesis of information.) It will enhance the analysis and resolution of cases the autonomous work and teamwork. To achieve the goal 6 (Reveal working skills group: join the team, be subject to assessment by peers, showing flexibility in interpersonal relationships.), Will be referred to teamwork, the peer review and conflict management techniques and interpersonal skills.To achieve goal 7 individual and group exercises will be developed as well as peer relationship and communication strategies. Finally, for goal 8 (Mastering the Portuguese Language as an instrument of cognition and using it effectively in the interpretation of texts and in oral and written communication), group dynamics, debate, interpersonal relationship skills will be used , conflict management techniques, peer evaluation, and reverse classes.
